In the mid 1960’s Sacred Heart School (grades 1-12) there were record enrollments of over 370 students per year. Under the direction of Msgr. J.L. Bauer, a large, modern high school facility was built for $445,000. It was built onto the south end of the existing structure, facing Marshall Street. It contained five classrooms, science laboratory, library, offices, kitchen and gymnasium/auditorium. The gym featured a regulation sized playing floor, telescoping bleachers to seat 700, and two large locker rooms. There was a stage built into the east wall of the gym. The large kitchen had the latest equipment for the hot lunch program, which stated in the fall of 1967.
This new building was named RYAN HIGH SCHOOL in honor of the late Msgr. J.J. Ryan, who had served Sacred Heart Parish for 33 years. Bishop Mueller officially dedicated Ryan High School on Sunday, October 15, 1967. Because of economic conditions, it was necessary to close Ryan High School in May of 1970, bring to an end a period of 83 years of uninterrupted high school parochial education in Boone.
